The scheme involved construction of S278 highway works for a new Morrisons Supermarket Development and included the construction of a new S38 access link road, including the resurfacing of surrounding roads and local improvements on the highway network.

The S278 works involved the construction of a new traffic signalised junction on this busy link road connecting Elland town centre with the A629, and included resurfacing and local improvements on the highway network. The works required extensive traffic management planning and close liaison with the highway authority and local businesses, with works being carried out in numerous phasing and sequencing to ensure smooth traffic flow was maintained on the highway network at all times, and to ensure access to businesses was maintained at all times.

Liaison with statutory undertakers was a key measure of success on the project with all major utilities been affected by the works requiring diversions or lowering to accommodate the new works.

The S38 element of the works involved the reconstruction and widening of 200m of existing single carriageway which served the development site and local businesses. Temporary widening of the road was required to allow us to carry out our works safely whilst maintaining access.

Elements of work involved in the whole project included earthworks, retaining walls, drainage, kerbing, ducting, utility diversions, street lighting, surfacing, traffic signals, road markings and landscaping works.
